Summary

3 / 5 ⭐: It was alright。 Right before starting, I read a review that just said "that was a lot of drama for a bunch of apples" and couldn't stop giggling, and had to see what they meant。 It's。。。a pretty spot-on review。 I would've liked a lot more magical realism or, I don't know。 Just。。。more magic。 Not a bad read, not one I'd quickly recommend, but fine。 3 / 5 ⭐: It was alright。 Right before starting, I read a review that just said "that was a lot of drama for a bunch of apples" and couldn't stop giggling, and had to see what they meant。 It's。。。a pretty spot-on review。 I would've liked a lot more magical realism or, I don't know。 Just。。。more magic。 Not a bad read, not one I'd quickly recommend, but fine。 。。。more

You can't tell me that Nixie, Leoda, Emery, and Albertine don't give off the same energy。 Same thing with the men's names: why are they all straight out of the Amish community? Zachariah, Hans, Henry, Jakob, Noah?? Petty comments aside, it wasn't just the names that I had issues with when it came to the characters。 Emery as a main character was okay at first, but then as time went on I started getting a bit annoyed by her。 I felt like most of what I read was her moping and living in the past, or being angry at people who were trying to protect her。 The former is understandable to a degree - first loves are not easy to forget, especially if they end as tragically as hers did - but it just made me want to shake her。 Especially when it came to her relationship with Dutch。 I think pg。 137 is when I was officially done with Emery's shit:"I watched [Dutch] go, ashamed that I was grateful。 I should have stopped him。 Asked him to come back。 Told him we could talk over dinner。 But I didn't。 I wouldn't。。。 I'd asked myself many times if his home could ever also be mine, and even in the rare moments when I could get my mind around the idea, the answer had never been yes。"??? Why you stringing him along then??The characters' reasonings as to why August killed Lily is also shit。 Pg。 149:" 'August is the only one who wasn't at the orchard close to the time Lily died。' "Okay, sure。 Sus。 Amogus。 But we aren't 1620s pilgrims (despite what the names might indicate)。 You can't just randomly choose who killed who, right? They have to have SOME sort of evidence, right??" 'The only reason he wasn't charged with her murder is because there was no physical evidence tying August to the scene where we found Lily。 And he had an alibi, even if it was a flimsy one。' "Like HELLO???Regarding the manner of Lily's death, does no one seem to remember that Saiorse Island has ~magic~? "Oh, she was found with water in her belly but was completely dry。" BRO DOES THAT NOT SCREAM MAGIC TO YOU?? Did that not cross your mind?!?!The more I write the more unhinged I'm getting, so I'll wrap this up lol。 Atmospheric vibes, dumb characters。 Interesting plot, bad execution。 。。。more

I liked it well enough。 The ending was a bit of a letdown for me。 I felt like there were a lot of loose threads 😕

The plot of this book had so much potential but it became predictable。 I had to force myself to pick it up and read because I was committed but I didn’t enjoy it。

I stayed up until 3 am to finish this, and tbh, I don't know if it was worth it。I probably would have liked it more if the ending had been a bit different。 I'm a petty person at heart, so I wanted to see MANY characters accordingly punished。 It didn't feel as satisfying otherwise。 I stayed up until 3 am to finish this, and tbh, I don't know if it was worth it。I probably would have liked it more if the ending had been a bit different。 I'm a petty person at heart, so I wanted to see MANY characters accordingly punished。 It didn't feel as satisfying otherwise。 。。。more

Ultimately lackluster。 I’m writing this a week after finishing this book and for the life of me I can’t remember how it ended。

This is the first book I have read by Adrienne Young and I was thoroughly surprised by how much I liked it。 This is combination of witch craft and mystery/thriller。 August returns to his small home town island and his past comes back to haunt him as the truth of a devastating night is revealed。 Paced slow, sometimes dragging on with what felt like fluff。 It is told from many POVs and a timeline that jumps from present to past, but this part is easy to keep straight。 There could have been more bu This is the first book I have read by Adrienne Young and I was thoroughly surprised by how much I liked it。 This is combination of witch craft and mystery/thriller。 August returns to his small home town island and his past comes back to haunt him as the truth of a devastating night is revealed。 Paced slow, sometimes dragging on with what felt like fluff。 It is told from many POVs and a timeline that jumps from present to past, but this part is easy to keep straight。 There could have been more build up of the magical aspect of the island and used more so that the conclusion to the murder made more sense。 The characters are immature with little overall development makes this novel feel more YA than Adult。 The combination of the slight magical aspect with the mystery/thriller was not over done to make things unbelievable, but made it enjoyable and a change of pace from the classic mystery/thrillers。 I enjoyed the novel in the end, and will be checking out other Adrienne Young novels。 I want to thank Netgalley and Delacorte Press for an ARC of this book。 。。。more

I love Adrienne Youngs writing and this was an enjoyable read if a little predictable。

This book had such a strong start for me, mostly in the aesthetics of the PNW island full of witchcraft。 But alas, the characters were so dull, the “twists” were so obvious, and for some reason the reader is told every time a character breathes or blinks and they do a lot of stiffening。Kinda wish I had a spell for forgetting this book tbh

3。5 rounded up。 Ancestral magic is a lot less showy and dramatic than what people tend to expect when they hear magic。 That said, this book was very light on the magic。 Too light for me, given that I picked it to read because of the magic aspect。 It was a good book, but the mystery wasn't quite enough on its own to make it a great book。 3。5 rounded up。 Ancestral magic is a lot less showy and dramatic than what people tend to expect when they hear magic。 That said, this book was very light on the magic。 Too light for me, given that I picked it to read because of the magic aspect。 It was a good book, but the mystery wasn't quite enough on its own to make it a great book。 。。。more

First, I don't hand out five stars to anyone。 I have certain criteria that the book has to match, and Spells for Forgetting pretty much ticked them all。 This book is phenomenal。 It's captivating from the first chapter until the last; I could barely put it down。 It's very well written and the author does a fantastic job of building tension between the characters and the readers。 At some points, you don't know which side to be on, who to trust, or what to believe, and you pretty much have to wait First, I don't hand out five stars to anyone。 I have certain criteria that the book has to match, and Spells for Forgetting pretty much ticked them all。 This book is phenomenal。 It's captivating from the first chapter until the last; I could barely put it down。 It's very well written and the author does a fantastic job of building tension between the characters and the readers。 At some points, you don't know which side to be on, who to trust, or what to believe, and you pretty much have to wait until the last few pages to be able to breathe again。 There isn't a dull moment, and even though I personally don't enjoy multiple POVs, I very much understand why it was necessary for this story。 It puts the characters up against each other, and as a spectator, I struggled with what and who to believe at times。 It felt like I was there with the characters, trying to figure out the mysteries with them。 It takes a lot to make my jaw drop and this book shocked me more than once。 I'm super excited to see what Adrienne will do with future books and stories。 I know for sure that I am anticipating coming work from this talented author。 Until then I'll work my way back in time to read other works by her。 I just love it when I discover an author that just fits me as a picky reader。 。。。more

A soft fantasy - a mystery/love story with an added element of magic。 Well told and intriguing。

I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。This was an okay read。 I liked the magic aspect of the story。 There were a lot of characters to keep track of, but the story flowed well and tied up nicely at the end。

Wasn’t impressed with how several answers were revealed toward the end。 The opportunity for clever characters solving mysteries was certainly there but ignored in lieu of easy plot progression。

Magical Realism is quickly becoming a new favorite genre。 This was Atmospheric。 Dark。 Light。 Soulful 。 Enchanting。 Witchy。 and takes place on a Mystical Island off of Seattle called Saoirse。Beautifully written and rich in its plot and setting。 Built with Multiple view points, gut wrenching love story, black magic and generational wounds。

Colleen

Lots of drama for some apples with no sense of urgency and a twist that guessable in the first 4 chapters。 The protagonist literally not questioning anything around her and being so obtuse frustrated me to no end。

**After writing my review I had to knock the book down to 2 stars 😆” 2。5-3 stars。 I REALLY wanted to love this book。 The atmosphere started off so good with a magical island and women who “run” the island by magic being passed down through them。 But then it never really goes anywhere with that。 Overall, the magical island was such a compelling idea and needs to get a re-do。 It never got to shine the way it should have。 spoilers ahead:I guessed the “big” reveal about a 1/3 into the book。 And then **After writing my review I had to knock the book down to 2 stars 😆” 2。5-3 stars。 I REALLY wanted to love this book。 The atmosphere started off so good with a magical island and women who “run” the island by magic being passed down through them。 But then it never really goes anywhere with that。 Overall, the magical island was such a compelling idea and needs to get a re-do。 It never got to shine the way it should have。 spoilers ahead:I guessed the “big” reveal about a 1/3 into the book。 And then it seems silly bc a bunch of people who live on a magical island but never suspect magic was involved in the “murder” mystery doesn’t make sense。 14 years is too long of a gap between the past and present for the story。 I didn’t really care about the main characters。 They were very dramatic and didn’t seem realistic。 I was also very uncomfortable about the sex scenes from when the main characters and side characters were 16 years old。 They are children。 We don’t need details。 And their internal dialogue seems like adults, not the children they were。 Some of the most interesting story lines and characters-Grandma Albertine vs Grandma Leoda anyone?!- weren’t finished and would have made better main characters。 The true bad guys just seem to get away with it all?! Meh。 。。。more

Magic。 Mystery。 Witchy Vibes。 Love。 An atmospheric tale of love, loss, murder, and second chances。 On Saiorse, a Pacific Northwest island deeply rooted in ancestral magic and folklore, Emery Blackwood knows something is coming。 The leaves of the trees have turned color overnight and the Starlings that typically leave at the first sign of winter, have stayed。 Their presence an ominous sign of things to come。That is the same day that August Salt returns to Saiorse, after 14 years, when a tragedy Magic。 Mystery。 Witchy Vibes。 Love。 An atmospheric tale of love, loss, murder, and second chances。 On Saiorse, a Pacific Northwest island deeply rooted in ancestral magic and folklore, Emery Blackwood knows something is coming。 The leaves of the trees have turned color overnight and the Starlings that typically leave at the first sign of winter, have stayed。 Their presence an ominous sign of things to come。That is the same day that August Salt returns to Saiorse, after 14 years, when a tragedy claimed the life of Lily Morgan, Emery's best friend, and August was the main suspect。 This on the same day that a fire ravaged the Salt-family orchard, the main hub of commerce and income for the island。 August knows he is not welcome, but he has returned to take care of family business to bury his mother's ashes, he has to confront those who turned their back on him, as well as try to close wounds that have never healed, mainly, Emery。But it becomes apparent that there may be more than an obvious reason to want August off the island。 Emery will begin to uncover deep betrayals and closely guarded secrets held by the people she knew and trusted, the people she grew up with。 And when the truth about Lily's death is finally revealed。。。it may just take the island down with it。 I believe this was Adrienne Young's first attempt at a fully adult novel and wow was it wonderful! This definitely gave me Summer of Salt vibes by Katrina Leno, but in adult form, and I was here for all the witchy atmosphere and the mystery that sat at the heart of the novel。Saiorse is an island of deep roots and in this story, it is almost a character unto itself。 There is an acknowledgement that the island is sentient, and it knows the people who touch it's soil 。 The people who reside there have been there for generations。 They take care of their own, and the island sees it all。 There is also, of course, an undercurrent of magic that flows within the women of Saiorse。 It is definitely an understated magic, very Practical Magic-esque。 It seems rooted in nature, with a reliance on herbs and other tinctures to heal, do spells, and things of that nature。 And though there was a magical realism aspect to this, at it's core。。。it was primarily a mystery, as well as a second-chance love story, mingled with family drama and the complications that come with living within a small place where everyone knows each other。I ultimately fell in love with Saiorse and the overall story getting caught up in the magic and the mystery。 I look forward to seeing what else Adrienne Young does in the future 。。。more
